Stegosaurus dinosaurs lived during the Jurassic period approximately 156 - 140 million years ago during a time when much more of the earth was covered by water. Stegosaurus was a plant eater (herbivore) and had to eat a lot of plants to maintain its giant weight of over 3 tons. Stegosaurus grew to be up to 30 feet long and 9 feet tall. Stegosaurus is famous for the bony plates that extend down the back and for the large spikes at the end of the tail. The spikes could be as much as 4 feet long, plenty long enough to provide a serious defense against predators and enemies. |
Stegosaurus walked on four legs even though the back legs are twice as long as the front legs. It is not known whether stegosaurus could raise up on the back legs to eat or not. Many scientists believe that the plates on the stegosaurus' back were used to regulate body heat, releasing heat when it was really hot and absorbing heat during times of cold temperatures. |
The first fossil of a Stegosaurus was discovered in 1876. Stegosaurus fossils have been found in many parts of the world including parts of the United States in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Because of its unique features Stegosaurus remains one of the most famous and interesting dinosaurs ever discovered. |
